Liturgical Song?

A liturgical song is a song that is integral to the liturgy.

Browse liturgical song titles in the alphabetical index and genres in the genre index. Find songs for particular days by clicking the liturgical index, or browse the navigation bar above.

Three principles help us to choose music for liturgical songs - liturgical holiness, musical beauty and pastoral universality.

Holy?

What is Holy?
Sacred music is considered "the more holy in proportion as it is more closely connected with the liturgical action" (Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, 112). It must be able "to express adequately the mystery grasped in the fullness of the Church's faith" (John Paul II).

Music, including sacred music, is not liturgically holy if it is incompatible with the liturgical action or Church teaching.

Beautiful?

What is Beautiful?
"The criterion that must inspire every composition and performance ... is the beauty that invites prayer." (John Paul II).

Requires sound form, true art, full adherence to the text it presents, synchronization with the time and movement in the Liturgy for which it is intended, appropriately reflecting the gestures proposed by the rite.
(John Paul II).

Universal?

What is Universal?
Three requirements:
1. "must comply with the legitimate demands of adaptation and inculturation"
2.
"must respect specific criteria such as the search for musical expressions which respond to the necessary involvement of the entire assembly in the celebration.
3.
"nobody of any nation may receive an impression other than good on hearing them."
(John Paul II).

How Much Singing?

How Much Singing?
(General Instruction, 40):
The amount of singing should correspond to the degree of solemnity of the occasion, with due consideration for culture and ability of the assembly; "preference should be given to those (parts) of greater importance and especially to those to be sung by the priest or the deacon or the lector, with the people responding, or by the priest and people together." Mass of Glory and Praise

Mass of Glory and Praise equips parishes and schools with a core repertoire of prayerful, memorable, contemporary settings of those songs of the Mass that are most frequently sung - the Kyrie (Penitential Act), Gloria(Glory to God), the Alleluia (Gospel Acclamation) and Lenten Gospel Acclamation, the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), the three new Memorial Acclamations, the Amen, the Pater Noster (Our Father), and the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).

This 2nd edition of Mass of Glory and Praise has been recommended by the Australian Bishops for use in all parishes and schools throughout Australia, to help develop a common Australian repertoire for the Mass. It is also one of the seven approved settings for use in New Zealand (click here for details).

Quotes from
Rite Notes
Review of Mass of Glory and Praise,
Vol 2, Issue 5
December 2010
Review by Cathy Murrowood

"It has a ‘rock’ feel featuring an interplay of vocal and instrumental parts."

"The music has energy, driven by the use of syncopation and instrumental interplay. The melodic range extends to B below middle C and to high D. Apart from the Alleluia, most of the higher notes are well placed at the end of refrains and acclamations."

"(There are) extensive instrumental parts that are of moderate difficulty." "The instrumental sections add colour by weaving through and between some of the vocal lines creating the occasional musical ’pause’ for the singer."

"A unique feature of the music is the inclusion of more than 100 Gospel verses for Sundays and Holy Days. There is also a Gospel Acclamation for Lent, always a welcome inclusion."

"The melody mainly moves by step. There are occasional leaps, however, which may be as much as an octave. The keys are playable; they do not feature more than 2 sharps or flats."

"The accompaniment varies from the very simple to the moderately complex but the inclusion of chords will assist musicians of modest ability."

"The Penitential Act (third form) may be adapted to include other invocations as more texts become available."

Pastoral Liturgy
Book Review
Vol 35, 4-5
June—November 2005
Review by Angela Bendotti

“… a refreshing, ‘upbeat’ new Mass setting …” “… it is well composed and it has been applied successfully, directly into the local parish setting.” “… a strong contemporary style that appreciates the beauty and grace of both music and song within the liturgy.”

“An extremely useful inclusion in this Accompaniment Edition is the Performance Notes, which comprehensively cover the musical, liturgical and pastoral considerations for the performance of this work.”

“... I was immediately struck by the joyful Glory to God.” “The touch of syncopation lifts this melody, and
would see it applied well for Masses with children and young adults.”

“The strength of this Our Father is the full acclamatory setting of the doxology For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.”

“Each of the Parts maintains a ‘stand alone’ characteristic whilst carrying the complete Mass motifs that
unify the work.”

“… it is, again, a strong liturgical feature of this work that the various parts have some change in key, mood and expression …” “A clear example of this is the Lamb of God with its key of F (other parts in the keys of D and A) and its soulful and reflective mood. It has an almost melancholic feeling, which draws you into the words you are singing.”

“The Instrument Parts include music for flutes, clarinet, bass, strings, alto saxophone, French horn, trumpet and trombone.” “The Choir Edition provides all of the important aspects required for
individual voices …”

“A strength of this Mass Setting is its ability to offer a simple arrangement, such as voice/cantor and piano/organ/guitar that may be beautifully applied, as well as the more enhanced and complex
arrangement of all of the abovementioned instruments across the various parts of the Mass.”

“To summarise, Paul Mason’s musical setting Mass of Glory and Praise has a wide scope for application across the parish music setting. Whether you have a small arrangement with piano/organ/
guitar and voices (where the Accompaniment Edition would be sufficient), or a full choir and orchestra (and anything in between!) you will be impressed with the style, melody and rhythms of this setting.

One can certainly sense the successful application of this setting into the school liturgical music program also — at primary and secondary levels.” “I highly recommend this setting to parishes and
schools alike.”
